Media + 2008 Election Coverage + New York Business Leaders = Angst?

Does anyone else have that feeling in their stomach whenever you turn on the television or browse the Web — you know, the feeling that there seems to be a political election every two weeks? It seems that certain media love to pontificate, prognosticate and issue poll results, even though it’s a full 20 months before election day. They have to scratch the itch. They just can’t help themselves. Well, it seems...nor can we, the voters. The 2008 Presidential elections has come up as a topic in so many meetings or phone calls I’ve had over the past few months, that I’ve lost count.

So...since the topic of Election Prognostication is top of mind, I’ve decided to issue a non-official rundown of NY business leaders’ sentiment about the current candidates for the 2008 Presidential elections. This is based on feedback I’ve personally received over the past several months from some very prominent New York business leaders. Sorry, I can’t actually tell you who provided me the feedback (they might not renew their membership dues in the Executive Council this year, thus gutting the resources that allow me to pontificate in this very column).

OK...here we go. The following are major candidates that have officially declared their candidacy for the 2008 Presidential Election, or are likely shoe-ins, along with the vastly different views I’ve collected about each candidate:

Republicans
Fmr. Governor Mitt Romney (MA): “Will the country vote for a Mormon?” “Best candidate of all the Republicans.” Smart.” “If he managed the Olympics surely he can run the country.” “Will raise a lot of NY money.”
Senator John McCain (AZ): “it’s his turn.” “Doesn’t he have a temper?” “can fix our Iraq problems.” “Man of the hour.”
Fmr. Mayor Rudy Giuliani (NY): “love him.” “should he run for President?” “What’s his platform?” “will speak his mind.” “a real man.”

Democrats
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (NY): “will never win.” “Nobody can beat the Clinton Machine.” “It’s time for a female president.” “Has a pile of dough.” “Will outraise and outspend candidates on both sides of the aisle.” “Too polarizing.” “The South won’t vote for her.” “Should have walked away from Bill after the Monica incident.” “Shows great courage to other women.” “has already locked up the Democratic money machine.”
Senator Barack Obama (IL): “the fresh face.” “Inspirational.” “Can’t win because country won’t elect an African-American.” “Will eat up media airtime and therefore diminish other candidates’ airtime.” “What’s his experience?” “best candidate in decades.” “will bring in a diverse base of voters.”
Fmr. Senator Jon Edwards (NC): “already vetted from the ‘04 election.” “Could win several of the early primaries.” “Why did he build at 30,000 sq ft home on the eve of announcing his candidacy about the Two Americas (haves and have-nots)?” “Sexy guy, he has my vote” (hey, I’m just reporting to you what people are saying).
Senator Joe Biden (DE): “non-starter after calling Obama the first ‘clean Black candidate.’” “opinionated.” “too old school.” “Won’t get press coverage he needs.” “won’t raise money.”
Governor Bill Richardson (NM): “Who?”
Senator Chris Dodd (CT): “isn’t he a drinking pal of Teddy Kennedy?” “seasoned.” “thoughtful.” “won’t resonate with rest of country.”

So there you have it. A clear direction for ‘08 from our fellow colleagues. Or not. Feeling Angst yet? Yeah, me too. But, the good news is that we have another 20 months to quell our angst and think deeply about who we would like to vote for in ‘08. It does matter. Time IS on our side.

Ten Award Winners On the Move

Jason FingerCongratulations to Ten Award winner Jason Finger, CEO of SeamlessWeb, for making the Crain’s 40 Under 40 list. Jason sold SeamlessWeb to Aramark last year and SeamlessWeb is expanding rapidly to provide online food ordering to corporations nationwide, revolutionizing the foodservice industry with cutting edge technology. We think Crain’s has good “taste” in nominating Jason for the 40 list!

Jon GrayTen Award Winner Jon Gray of Blackstone, who took top honors as “Dealmaker of the Year” at the Ten Awards last November, is proving his prolific deal-making skills once again. This time, he was the chief architect for Blackstone’s acquisition of Equity Office, beating out Vornado in deal that now means the Blackstone Real Estate group, headed by Jon, has $43 billion in assets. Congratulations to Jon for his diligence and decisiveness in making this powerful deal a reality.
