Johnston/On
Kripalu
With so many of us hooked on Blackberries, e-mail and cell phones (not to mention the day-to-day stress of office life), is there really any escape? Of course, says Dinabandhu, president of Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, a wellness center founded in 1966 in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. Since opening, Kripalu has appealed to an increasingly wide array of personality types. So what are they seeking? We asked Dinabandhu (whose birth name is Garrett Sarley) for some insight.
How have yoga and the healing arts evolved in recent years?
Yoga and the healing arts have become more accessible to the main stream in recent years. Fifteen years ago they may have seemed more esoteric and mysterious, whereas now they seem helpful and appropriate. I think a lot of that change has been due to all the scientific research that has validated the efficacy of these approaches.
Are people in worse shape mentally and physically now than five or ten years ago? Are we digging ourselves into a hole that makes treatment even more necessary?
There's no question that the pace of modern life has increased in the last decade or two. At the same time, the basic human experience of being one's self has not really changed. People have been ill at ease in their lives since time began, and I'm not sure the phenomenon is worse today than it was in the past. What everyone craves is more comfort being themselves. I know executives who are totally wired in who are deeply fulfilled with who they are, and I know hermits who don't even own a car who are not comfortable with who they are. This is one of the main ancillary benefits of practicing the physical form of yoga. If you practice regularly, you'll absolutely start to feel happier in your life.
Some busy people might think that they're just not the type to sit still for a massage, yoga or other programs. How do you respond to people who think they're too hyper (or too busy) to sit still?
I think perhaps you frame the question in the wrong way. I've talked with many people who say they don't have the time to take care of their lifestyle, but when they get sick, they always have plenty of time to deal with being sick. So a better framing of the question might be to ask "How satisfied are you with the quality of your life right now?" If there is room for improvement, you have to make some changes in service of that improvement. If you make no changes, then the likelihood of improvement is not very high.
What kinds of people come to Kripalu? What are they looking for when they visit?
We educate and enliven people from all over the world and from every age group and socioeconomic bracket. Mainly we interact with people who have an intuitive sense that they could get more out of life than they are currently getting. Many people in our society have certain parts of their lives pretty together. They have a good job, or they feel like they can earn enough money, but they feel a lack in other parts of their lives.
If you could suggest one change that the average person could make in their daily schedule, to reduce stress and feel better, what would it be?
Take a deep breath as often as you can remember to. All emotional, physical and psychological stress patterns get reflected in patterns of breathing, so if you can change those patterns, all the other stress patterns also start to shift. Of course, the results are pretty highly correlated to the effort expended, so the more interest you take in your health and the more energy you put into creating vitality in your life, the better results you'll get.

Thought Provoking Write-Up
Creating Value from Intellectual Property.
Abbie Lundberg is editor-in-chief of CIO Magazine and Moderator of the Executive Council’s recent New IP Economy™ Forum. This article appeared in this month’s CIO Magazine.
We live and work in an increasingly knowledge-based economy. Much of what people produce and consume has no tangible manifestation. Even when it does, the thing that makes that good most valuable and unique—the innovation that sets it apart—does not.
As companies increasingly compete on innovation, and as we continue to digitize everything (IDC predicts we will generate close to 1,000 exabytes of data by 2010) —as that happens, our ability to understand, leverage and protect our intellectual assets is core to the health of our organizations and our economy.
