Johnston/On
Nina Zagat, Co-Chair, Zagat Survey
What
is your background and how did you become the Diva of
Dining?
I don’t regard myself as a “Diva”, but
this is how the Zagat Survey started.
Tim [husband, Tim Zagat] and I met at Yale Law School,
and we got married in the spring of our second year. Shortly
after we began practicing law, we were assigned to the
Paris offices of our respective law firms. Whenever possible,
I used to spend my lunch break taking classes at Le Cordon
Bleu cooking school.
Once back in New York, we joined a wine tasting group.
During one of the group’s dinners, an outspoken
friend of ours blasted the then most important New York
City food critic. Tim asked each of our 20 fellow diners
to give him the names of a few people who ate out regularly
and might enjoy participating in a restaurant survey.
We released the results of this informal survey free of
charge on mimeographed, legal sheets of paper. It involved
roughly 200 people rating and reviewing 100 restaurants.
That was 1979. Three years later, in the fall of 1982,
we published our first survey in book form for sale.
Today, our surveys have expanded to cover restaurants
in 85 cities and a host of other leisure activities. Our
group of surveyors has reached well over 250,000 people.
What is your most successful guide?
Year after year our New York City Restaurant guide remains
most popular. But we regularly do customized guides for
large companies involving sales of a million or more copies,
and a couple of years ago we made a single sale of five
million copies of our Movie Guide.
What are some of your challenges?
We are continually expanding to new geographies, introducing
new content categories and making Zagat content available
on new platforms. One central challenge that we always
keep top of mind is our goal of making Zagat content available
to consumers in every format and on every platform they
may find useful. A second challenge is facilitating connectivity,
i.e. helping our customer to act on their decisions.
What makes New York special?
New York is unmatched in the diversity and quality of
its restaurants. We now have over ninety cuisine types
represented in the NYC guide. It’s hard to imagine,
but as recently as 1979, there were only nineteen.
