CFO & Sales Ops Dinner

April 19, 2018
Jim Dunlevy, Controller, Charlotte Hornets
& Martina Ballen, CFO, UNC Sports Dept.

A native of Durham, Jim Dunlevy earned his degree in Mathematics and Economics from Washington and Lee University. Jim started his career as a police officer in his hometown, much to the dismay of his career counselor and parents. He spent 7 years as an officer in Durham and it remains a source of pride and meaning to him. Jim returned to school and obtained a Masters of Accounting from UNC Chapel Hill and, subsequently, worked at Arthur Anderson, KPMG and Ernst & Young. Jim moved to the client side by joining the Hornets in 2007. As the Controller for the club and Treasurer for the associated non-profit, he has helped the organization through various transitions including the majority interest acquisition by Michael Jordan, the name change from the Bobcats to the Hornets, and the formation of the minor league basketball team, the Greensboro Swarm.

Martina Ballen serves as UNC's Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Business and as the department's Chief Financial Officer. A 1980 UNC graduate, she has worked in the athletic department since 1987.

Ballen graduated from Carolina with a degree in business administration. She went on to earn her master of business administration from Wake Forest in 1984.

Ballen started at UNC as Director of Finance and in 1992 was promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics for Business and Finance. She was then promoted to Associate Director in 1995 and Senior Associate in 2001. In 2011 she was named Chief Financial Officer.
